Local SEO

Local SEO in Richmond, BC

Getting a Richmond business found by the people who add “bc” to their search, and kept apart from the many other Richmonds that Google weighs at the same moment.

  • Name collision
  • Neighbourhood wording
  • Plaza unit numbers
  • Reviews
  • Multilingual structure

One city name, shared with half a continent

Type “plumber richmond” into Google.ca and the suggestions run through Richmond Hill, then Richmonds in Virginia, Kentucky, Texas, Indiana and Missouri, and even one in Victoria, Australia, before the city on Lulu Island appears. Locals have learned to work around this. They type “plumber richmond bc”, “dentist richmond bc” or “richmond bc restaurants”, and Google leans toward pages that make the province unmistakable.

That habit defines the first task of local SEO here: removing every doubt about which Richmond you are in. The city, the province and your full address should read identically on your website, your Google Business Profile and each directory that lists you. Only after that is settled does it pay to chase finer detail, such as the neighbourhood, the plaza or the road customers use to find you.

The second task comes from the city itself. Richmond counted 209,937 residents in the 2021 census, making it the fourth-largest city in British Columbia, and roughly six in ten residents were born outside Canada. Many households speak Cantonese or Mandarin at home, and plenty of customers arrive from elsewhere in Metro Vancouver over a bridge or on the Canada Line. A search plan written for one uniform audience misses most of that.

  • 4th largest city in British Columbia
  • About 60% of residents are immigrants, the highest share in Canada

Search demand

What Richmond types into Google.ca

Suggestions gathered on Google.ca in October 2026. Count how many carry “bc” or a local landmark, and how many belong to a different Richmond altogether.

Search term Intent Why it matters
richmond seo company Medium The agency search, though Google blends in firms from other Richmonds.
seo richmond va Research Offered first for “seo richmond”: proof the bare city name is ambiguous.
plumber richmond bc High The local reflex of adding the province so the right city comes back.
dentist richmond bc no 3 road High The main commercial road used to tighten the map. Name yours on your pages.
walk in clinic blundell richmond bc High A neighbourhood name doing the work a street name would elsewhere.
bubble tea near richmond centre High A shopping centre treated as the landmark people steer by.
steveston plumbing richmond bc High Steveston searched as a place in its own right, not simply part of the city.
golden village richmond restaurants High The dining district by name, a phrase worth echoing if you trade there.

Say “BC”, then say where in Richmond

The pattern in the data has two layers. First, people rule out the other Richmonds by adding bc. Then they zoom in with No. 3 Road, Steveston, Blundell, Ironwood or a shopping centre. So we fix the province in your titles, address and structured data before anything else, and only then write the neighbourhood, plaza and nearest landmark into the pages where they genuinely belong.

How Google orders the map

Relevance, distance and prominence on Lulu Island

Google names these three as the basis of its local results. In a delta city wedged between Vancouver and the airport, each behaves in its own way.

01

Relevance

You control this

Whether your listing and pages match the words typed. Richmond searchers narrow by place: “dentist richmond bc no 3 road”, “walk in clinic blundell richmond bc”, “dentist steveston richmond bc”. If your road, plaza or neighbourhood appears nowhere in your text, Google has nothing to tie those words to, so we write it in plainly, beside a separate entry for each service you offer.

02

Distance

You cannot control this

How far you sit from the person searching. A phone in Steveston and a phone at Richmond Centre see different shortlists, and a “near me” search from Bridgeport may surface businesses across the Fraser in Vancouver. Your premises stay put, so effort goes into the neighbourhoods and searches where your location is an advantage rather than the ones where it never will be.

03

Prominence

You control this

How established Google judges you to be: the number and freshness of reviews, directory entries that agree with one another, and mentions on local websites. Reviews may arrive in English, Chinese or another language, and each deserves an answer. When someone on staff can reply in the reviewer’s own language, every later reader sees that care.

The work

Where the work goes, step by step

01

One address, written one way

Business name, unit number, street, “Richmond, BC” and phone recorded identically on the website, the Business Profile and the directories Google compares. Plaza addresses with a unit number are where mismatches most often creep in.

02

Pages that match what you sell

A separate page for each main service, so “emergency dentist” and “pediatric dentist” each get a page that answers them instead of a single line in a long list.

03

Neighbourhood detail that is true

Where you trade, how to reach you from the Canada Line or Highway 99, which side of the plaza your door faces. Written once, in plain text, wherever it helps a visitor.

04

Room for more than one language

If your customers read Chinese, Korean or another language, we can set up separate pages per language with the right tags, ready for text your team writes or has professionally translated. We do not write or translate that text ourselves.

05

A steady flow of reviews

A simple routine for asking each satisfied customer, plus a reply to every review, so your record keeps growing rather than stalling after one busy month.

06

Rankings sampled across the city

Positions checked from City Centre, Steveston, East Richmond and points between, because results shift from one end of Lulu Island to the other.

Done carefully

What we will not promise

Rules we keep for every client, written down so you can hold us to them.

Plainly
Nobody can place you first on every phone between Sea Island and the farms of East Richmond. Where the searcher stands is part of the answer.

Google tailors local results to each searcher’s location, device and history, so a single ranking screenshot proves little. What we commit to is a sensible order of work, a short monthly report in plain English, and an honest word whenever a task would not repay its cost.

Reports
Monthly, without jargon
Checked from
Several Richmond neighbourhoods
Commitment
The work itself, not a position

  • No promised number-one position on the map.
  • No paying for reviews, trading them or offering perks in return.
  • No city or keyword stuffed into your business name.
  • No pages for neighbourhoods you do not actually serve.

Questions

Questions Richmond owners ask about local SEO

Do I really need “BC” in my page titles?

In most cases, yes. Google’s own suggestions for Richmond searches mix in Virginia, Richmond Hill and several other places, and local customers have responded by adding “bc”. Naming the province in your titles, address and structured data costs nothing and settles the question.

Many of my customers speak Cantonese or Mandarin. Can local SEO reach them?

Yes, though the words have to come from your side. We set the site up so each language has its own pages, with tags telling Google which version is which; your team writes those pages or has them professionally translated. Machine-translated copy tends to read awkwardly and wins little trust.

Why do Vancouver businesses show up for searches made in Richmond?

Ranking leans partly on distance, and from the north end of the city a business across the river can be nearer than one in Steveston. That boundary cannot be moved, but specific service pages, neighbourhood detail and a steady run of reviews give Google better reasons to pick you.

How long before anything changes?

Fixes to listing details and directory entries tend to show first, sometimes inside a month. Fresh service pages and a lengthening review record take longer: expect a visible direction around month three or four, and later still in contested fields such as dental, dining and property.

What does local SEO cost?

Every plan covers it. Starter costs $300, Growth $500 and Pro $700 monthly, billed in Canadian dollars, and you can leave at the end of any month. Our pricing page breaks down the differences.

Directories keep dropping our unit number. Does it matter?

More than most owners expect. In a plaza with dozens of tenants, a missing or reformatted unit number can lead Google to treat two listings as different places. We choose one format, apply it everywhere, and then correct the directories that disagree.
